Self Care

How often are you taking the time to practice self-care? What does that mean to you and how do you practice? Self-care does not need to be another task you put on your to-do list. It should be something that you love to do, that feeds your soul and refills your energy and spirit.

But it doesn’t have to be complicated. While it would be nice to have hours a day to do yoga or go to the spa, it’s not always practical. Sometimes just thinking about when you can fit those things into your schedule can be stressful. Self-Care doesn’t have to be all or none or some big planned out event. There are a few simple ways that you can sneak in some self-care without taking a lot of time out of your day.

Take a few minutes in the morning. A great way to set the day off in the right direction is to take a few minutes to yourself each morning. Instead of jumping out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off, take a few minutes to wake up, plan your day and think of some things that you are looking forward to or are grateful for. Taking some time before you get out of bed to get your thoughts together can help to make your day less chaotic and more purposeful.

Stop and breathe. How often do you take a minute to breathe? It does’t take long to take a few breaths but it can help increase energy and reduce stress. A few slow, deep breaths can be like a reset for your mind and body. You can even set a timer to stop what you are doing every few hours and take a minute to breathe.

Cut out the noise. Constant news and chatter whether in the car, work, or at home can make us feel stressed without even knowing it. Instead during your commute or in the background of your day listen to your favorite music or book. Music feeds the soul. Do you ever notice that when you listen to music that you love it energizes you and uplifts your mood? Likewise learning about something you love by listening to an audiobook can make you feel excited or inspired.

Soak up some sun. Sunlight can have a huge impact on mood and health. I try and make it a point to sit in the sun for a few minutes a day. I use it as a time to close my eyes and refill my energy and spirit.

Bedtime routine. Sleep is an essential part of a self-care routine. Sleep is a very basic self-care technique that often gets overlooked. A good night’s rest is so important for overall health and wellness. But what if sleep doesn’t come easily to you? Sometimes a bedtime self-care routine can help. Things like shutting off the phone an hour before bed, sipping some tea, applying some essential oils, meditating or listening to soft music can help train your body to get ready for sleep. Ending your day the same way you started it by thinking of the good things that happened or by being grateful or proud of yourself for the things you’ve accomplished is the perfect way to end the day with care and love for yourself.

What are some things you like to do either big or small that make you feel happy, less stressed and more fulfilled? Make a list and start with a few self-care practices throughout your day because even the smallest actions can have huge rewards.
