In the age of the Great Resignation, it is more important than ever for companies to rethink their wellness programs and provide solutions that serve their employees. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 4.5 million American workers quit their jobs in November, a record high with no signs of slowing down.

To attract and retain top talent, organizations must look beyond compensation and really dig into corporate culture and wellness. In fact, in one study, 87% of employees surveyed consider health and wellness packages when choosing an employer, and more than half of all Gen Zers and Millennials surveyed consider corporate wellness programs important or extremely important when making a job decision.

With pandemic burnout and other stressors affecting our employees, we predict a few areas of corporate wellness and prevention that companies should consider in 2022.

Mental Health Resources

According to Mental Health America’s latest Mind The Workplace report, nearly 9 in 10 employees shared that workplace stress affects their mental health, and 56 percent of those surveyed felt that their employers did not provide a safe environment for employees who live with mental illness. In 2022, companies will have a stronger focus on mental health resources for their employees. They may also consider offering resources on various stress management techniques, such as meditation and mindfulness.

Nontraditional Benefits

As companies increase their focus on employee wellbeing, they may consider offering nontraditional benefits. Our priorities and needs have shifted over the past two years, and employees may need more support in terms of child care, elder care or parental leave. The pandemic has also taught us that a traditional 9-5 schedule is not necessary for all industries and positions, so allowing more flexible hours and allowing asynchronous communication tools can be a strong selling point for employees, especially those who may be parents or caretakers.

Remote and Hybrid Opportunities

In 2022, organizations will continue to rethink remote and hybrid job opportunities. According to one study, 81 percent of hybrid employees reported high levels of engagement in their work, and the Federal Reserve Economic Data found that labor productivity had increased during the pandemic. Employees have embraced flexibility in their work environments, and many are now looking for an organization that will offer a hybrid model.

Employee Feedback

To keep a pulse on employees’ changing needs and priorities in 2022, companies will continue to survey their team members. It is important to recognize the levels of stress and burnout in our workforce as a whole, but even more important to understand the unique perspectives of your own employees and the challenges they are facing. Consider asking about mental health, work environment, and other areas of well-being that may affect your team.

While the Great Resignation continues on into 2022, incorporating these trends into your corporate wellness plan can help you attract and retain a happier workforce. To learn about other ways to engage your employees in the new year, check out our Corporate Health Challenges.
