As business leaders in today’s landscape, many of us now understand the value of prioritizing employee wellness. With the Great Resignation and the stress of a pandemic, employees are placing a higher emphasis than ever on mental and physical health in the workplace. As these trends continue, companies are finding that corporate wellness resources not only help with employee retention, but can also be used as a valuable tool for recruiting top talent.
For younger generations especially, wellness and work/life balance have become top priorities when choosing a job. Millennials, who have been nicknamed The Burnout Generation, believe that workplace wellness is a must. According to one survey, roughly ¾ of Millennial employees believe that their employer should play a role in reducing workplace stress, through benefits like gym memberships, flexible work schedules and other programs relevant to their needs. Meanwhile, Gen Z is also experiencing significant levels of burnout and stress, with 27% reporting their mental health as fair or poor, and they benefit greatly from wellness-related support in the workplace as well.
At Coca Cola, mental health and mindfulness became important pillars of employee wellness during the pandemic, so the company launched its Life at Coke mental health platform to provide resources like helplines, webinars, fitness sessions and other support. Another organization, Packard Culligan Water, provided employees with no-cost resources like weekly self-care videos and well-being communications, manager well-being calls, live meditation sessions and breaks, and other activities to boost morale among team members.
Through corporate wellness benefits, employers can maintain a competitive advantage when recruiting top talent and keep their employees happier in the long run. Recent studies show that 87% of employees consider health and wellness packages when choosing an employer, and 67% of employees who work for organizations with wellness programs are extremely likely to recommend their employer to others, but that only 25% of organizations actually use these programs to recruit employees.
Focusing on well-being in the workplace leads to better work performance, improved company culture and collaboration, and lower healthcare costs. One way to build morale and help employees remain connected is to offer a corporate health challenge in your organization. Through our Corporate Health Challenges portal, companies can choose from more than 40 wellness-focused challenges that will motivate their employees and reward them for their efforts. From racing to the top of Mount Olympus to solving a crime mystery, participants can work toward their wellness goals while having fun with their coworkers and building a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition.
