The holidays have ended, flu season is in full effect, and springtime is just around the corner. We are all scrambling to get back to the grind and get our health fully on track.
For companies, incorporating health into day-to-day work life may be a challenge (check out how we suggest creating a healthy workplace!). The key is to make it enjoyable. Fitness challenges are a worldwide phenomenon that encourage the public to get on track with their health. So why not bring some of those challenges into the workplace?
Here are a few challenges and campaigns to engage your employees in wellness!
Walking Challenge
Walking is the most simple way to get your employees moving. After all, we already do it everyday. Create a point system, or have employees log their miles walked each week. A good way to do this is by providing participating employees with “fitness trackers”, using their smartphones to track steps, or simply have them log it in a spreadsheet. How you choose to compensate employees for their miles and steps is up to you! Try offering a longer lunch break, an extra vacation day, or even a bonus– something to get everyone to want to participate.
Meditation Challenge
Meditating is one of the easiest wellness strategies to incorporate into office life. No tools or fancy gadgets are needed, and no movement is necessary. A simple way to integrate meditation into your workplace wellness challenges is to divide employees into groups, encouraging not only meditation itself, but bonding between coworkers. A point system, or tracking amount of minutes spent meditating, is the key to this one. Encourage groups to get together for at least a few minutes each day to meditate. Meditation is proven to increase mindfulness and reduce stress, resulting in an increasingly pleasant work environment. Weight Loss Campaign
Weight loss can be a touchy subject. It is crucial to encourage weight loss in a healthy way– it’s why we’re calling this one a “campaign” rather than a challenge. You want to reinforce employees to take their time and not rush to drop pounds too quickly. So how do we create a positive environment for weight loss? Make it fun! Incorporate some of our other challenges into it– encourage getting exercise and eating healthy. Go on group walks, host an in-office yoga session every week, provide healthy lunches to employees. Have everyone write a daily log of their journey, and advocate for everyone to share their tips and discuss their weight loss regimens. To measure and create a healthy and competitive spirit, calculate the percentage of body fat lost over time in each employee, and provide a fun reward at the end!
Healthy Food Challenge
We all know that eating healthy can be a challenge in itself. With cheaper and unhealthier options always around the corner, it is easy to grab a quick bite from the fast food restaurant across the street or spend a buck on a vending machine snack. An effective way to promote healthy habits is to provide more nutritious options in the office itself. Replace those unhealthy vending machine snacks and provide fruits and other organic foods around the workplace. To motivate employees to participate in healthy eating, make it a challenge! Have employees log their meals everyday over a chosen period of time, or give them a point every time they actively choose a healthier lunch option.
“Lunch and Learn” Challenge
So… what is a “lunch and learn”? Host health professionals at your office to come speak and provide tips and tricks on living a balanced lifestyle. Don’t fret on this taking too much time away from the desk– provide it during lunch breaks! Who doesn’t love a little entertainment while they eat? If your employees aren’t exactly motivated to attend, the key is to make it into a fun challenge. Give everyone who attends a point, and even cater lunch to employees on these days. Employees with the most points for attending at the end of this challenge can earn a nice reward.
