As temperatures heat up and the school year comes to an end, one thing is certain: summer is here! In honor of Great Outdoors Month this June, we encourage you to take some time this summer to soak up the sun and enjoy all of the beauty that our great outdoors have to offer.

Getting outside can yield countless mental health benefits for people of all ages, including decreased levels of anxiety and depression. Studies show that time outdoors can also reduce your risk of conditions like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Ready to get outside? Here are a few of our tips for making the most of your time outdoors this summer.

Visit a local trail.

Whether you’re an expert hiker or you simply enjoy strolling among wildlife, there are countless parks and trails worth exploring. If you need some hiking recommendations, AllTrails is a free app and website that allows you to search for trails in your area. You can filter by level of difficulty, length, elevation and more – plus, you can search specifically for kid-friendly trails to bring the whole family! The app also includes reviews from others who have visited the trail in the past so that you know what to expect when you arrive.

Take a road trip through the National Parks.

For those who love to travel, why not go on an adventure this summer? This website has several road trips mapped out in different regions of the United States so that you can plan your own self-guided road trip. From the Grand Canyon to the Smoky Mountains, these road trips cover it all.

Go to the beach.

If you live near the coast (or are willing to make the drive), a beach day can be just what the doctor ordered! June 8 is National Oceans Day, but our beaches are well worth a visit all summer long. The National Parks Service offers this handy resource to help you locate beaches and coastal parks near you.

Join the Great American Campout.
The National Wildlife Federation sponsors the Great American Campout, with resources for those aspiring campers out there. Whether you camp out or “camp in,” their site offers fun games, tips for setting up the perfect campsite, snack recipes, a stargazers’ guide, and more.

Participate in outdoor community service.
Giving back to your community allows you to make a difference in the world, while also improving your own mental health and mindset. You can take that impact one step further this month with some outdoor community service projects! Keep Florida Beautiful is one of many nonprofit organizations that focus on protecting our environment, offering beach cleanups and other beautification projects that allow volunteers to help save the planet.

Become a Park Health Ambassador.
The National Parks Service has a Park Health Ambassador program, where people of all ages can learn more about connecting with nature and sharing those experiences with their community. Take advantage of fun outdoor events all summer long while spreading that joy to others.

Bring your social activities outside.
Spending more time outdoors doesn’t have to mean making major changes to your routine. If you’re less of an outdoorsy person but still want to enjoy the health benefits of time outside, there are plenty of smaller shifts you can make. Meeting up with a friend? Eat lunch outdoors on the patio or take a walk around your local botanical garden. Celebrating a birthday or holiday? Host a cookout! Getting outside doesn’t have to be a significant lifestyle change. Try out activities that work for you!

By spending more time outdoors, we can improve our health and overall well-being. Try out one or all of these family-friendly tips to make this summer your best one yet!
