Now that school is out, finding budget-friendly activities for the whole family can feel like a daunting task. As the world opens back up, we’re excited to live life a little more “normally” again, but our wallets might not be so sure. To help you make the most of your summer, we’ve rounded up a few of our favorite activities that the whole family can enjoy – without breaking the bank.
Enjoy the great outdoors.
Great Outdoor Month may be over, but there are still plenty of ways you can get outside and spend time in nature. State and national parks often charge admission by vehicle rather than by person, and many parks and hiking trails are free to visit. Take your family on a nature walk and see which plants and wildlife you can identify on the trails. You can also visit a local spring and go swimming or kayaking, or pack lunch and set up a picnic. Time outside can even be spent in your own backyard, with family relay races, a friendly kickball game, or even a run through the sprinklers.
Go on a scavenger hunt around town.
You can get a little creative and come up with a scavenger hunt by putting pen to paper, or download an app like GooseChase where you can join other scavenger hunts or build your own. Driving or walking around your city or town with the whole family is a great way to learn more about where you live and gain a greater appreciation for your area. You may also be able to find free scavenger hunts in your area with a simple Google search as well!
Camp out at home.
If you don’t have the gear for a full-on campout, why not set up camp at home? You can stargaze in the backyard, roast marshmallows, and tell spooky stories – all with the comforts of home close by.
Have a movie night.
Set up your next movie night in style! Pop your favorite movie theater-style popcorn or pick up other classic movie snacks (hello, Junior Mints!), set up a blanket fort in the living room, dim the lights and press “play.” IKEA has an excellent guide to help you up-level your next blanket fort!
Give back through community service.
Volunteering is a great way to instill a love for community in your kids. Pick out a cause that is important to you and your family, and figure out what you can do together to give back.
Search “free” or “cheap” activities in your city.
Sometimes, the best way to find fun things to do is by searching online. Local bloggers and newspapers often share family-friendly activities taking place in your area, so whenever you see activities or attractions that sound interesting to you, find a place to keep track of them. They might also share Groupons or other online coupons whenever there are sales taking place that you’ll want to take advantage of! When in doubt, you can always turn to Pinterest and start pinning the activities and attractions that would be the best fit for you and your family.
