Sunny days, pool parties, and family vacations may define summer—but in Florida, one thing is always on our minds: hurricane season. From June 1 to November 30, severe weather risks rise, and preparing isn’t just about shutters and emergency kits. It’s also about financial readiness. Here are four practical tips to help keep your money protected this hurricane season.

1. Build an emergency fund into your budget.

Budgeting is the foundation of strong financial health. If you haven’t created one yet, now is a great time to start. A simple model is the 50/30/20 rule—50% toward essentials, 30% toward lifestyle, and 20% toward savings and debt repayment. If 20% feels high, start with a smaller amount and make it consistent. An emergency fund gives you confidence and breathing room when unexpected expenses arise.

2. Protect your financial documents.

Flooding and severe weather can damage important paperwork. Keep essential financial documents in a safe, secure location—such as a safe deposit box or a waterproof/fireproof container at home. It’s also wise to store digital copies in a secure cloud or encrypted drive so you can access them even if physical copies are lost.

3. Keep cash on hand.

If the power goes out, card transactions and ATMs may be unavailable. Having a reasonable amount of cash set aside ensures you can still purchase necessities if systems are temporarily down.

4. Watch out for scammers.

Scammers often take advantage of stressful situations by sending fake emails, texts, or calls. Be cautious with unsolicited messages—especially those asking for account numbers or personal information. For guidance on spotting and preventing identity theft, click here.
